Rough Kindling: Poem

Updated: Dec 20, 2021

Out in woods somewhere

The dark rising and no

Encampments in sight

My stomach full yet I scrounge for more

Nourishment

A spark I carry with me

Some kindling too I will find

Do the flames sustain or not

With the stars, that too shall be revealed

What gets me through the night

I won’t leave come dawn

My fidelity hasn’t gone to the dogs

Though the wild beasts

Roam here in the thousands

None are there which stalk me

Each of them have their own

Unrelenting poacher after their hide and bones

Dangers lie ahead for me aplenty

I will sleep beside them soon

In the shared warmth of a fire I may reach out and as

The sun wakes me

I will find the other

Not nearly as monstrous as

The night before
